I planted many types of vegetables again and again and Continued my Experiments. I Learned a lot from those. So now I am here to tell you my experience and knowledge too so that you don’t need to take so much hassle that I have taken. So, let’s Begin.
Gardening || More Than Just a Hobby
Gardening is a fabulous experience that forces you to do so much and learn so much. It provides an endless opportunity to learn. It is not just about planting and growing. It’s an emotion. In my journey, I learn a lot and do a lot. By doing and learning I make many mistakes and know many things.
I learned a lot in my journey. My mistakes are my biggest teachers. I first experimented with soil types, plant varieties, raised beds, and watering techniques. I faced many hassles in my journey, especially in Europe, where the seasons and weather patterns can be unpredictable.
Selecting the Right Location for Your Garden
You need to choose the right location for your garden because it’s the main factor deciding its production. If you select a place that is not good for gardening, you may be unsuccessful in your gardening journey. So when you select your garden location you may remember that it will have a good place for plans.
Here is the list of things that you might remember when you are selecting the right place for your plans:
- Sunlight: Most of the plants need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight to grow well. If you can’t provide that plants don’t provide a good amount of crops. So you need to select a place that doesn’t have the shade of big trees or buildings.
- Soil Quality: The quality of soil is very important because this is the foundation of all. Choose a location that has good-quality soil and a well-drainage environment that’s rich in nutrients. You may need to add some organic matter to improve your soil quality.
Especially if you have sandy soils. If you want to improve your soil quality, you can see my Blog. - Water Access: Your garden must be in a place where water can be easily found because Hand-watering is tough and time-consuming. You can set up a hose pipe or Drip Irrigation System in your garden to make it easy to water them. But you do not need to do this. As a beginner, this will be very costly for you. On the other hand, it will save time.
- Weather Protection: Wind, heavy rains, or extreme weather conditions can harm your plants and you need to protect them. So Select a location with some protection like short plants, a Fence, or a short wall. Those will protect plants from heavy wind. You also need to select a slightly high area so it can prevent flooding.
- Accessibility: You will be spending much time in your garden so you need to make your garden more functional and easy to reach. It will help your garden to be more convenient and help you to take care of the plants regularly, check progress, and take necessary action. It also has watering, weeding, and harvesting.
- Space for Growth: You need to make sure that your plant has enough space to grow. Some plants, like tomatoes and zucchini, need more space to grow. Again, others like lettuce, leafy vegetables, and herbs, can grow in a small space. When planning in a garden, remember to ensure plants have enough space to grow. Plan for the full size of your plants to avoid overcrowding, which can cause disease and poor growth.
- Proximity to Trees and Roots: you need to avoid being too close to large trees or shrubs. That’s because their root systems can compete with your vegetables for nutrients and water. It will decrease your plan’s health and production. So, avoid placing your garden too close to them. You need also to make sure the area is free from invasive roots that could interfere with your garden.
By choosing the right location, you can make your garden more productive. You will be able to get a good amount of crops from your garden from the very start if you work if you keep these things in mind. Choosing the perfect spot for your vegetable garden is one of the most critical decisions. This step can make or break your success
Tip: Test different areas of your yard by observing where the sun hits throughout the day. It’s worth spending a few days doing this before deciding.
Choose Your Growing Method
When starting your vegetable garden, choosing the right growing method can significantly improve your gardening experience and the health of your plants. There are three ways to grow vegetables. In my gardening journey, I tried many edible growing methods, including Direct Ground Planting, Container Gardening, and Raised Beds.
Direct Ground Planting
Most of the gardeners grow their crops directly to the ground for the first time. It is good to go with a start, but this is not preferable. Raise beds provide a huge level of flexibility to grow. This is great for deep-rooted plans. You can grow any type of crop easily here, but the main problem is you might face soil quality or pests-related problems. This way is more economical and easy to start.
Container Gardening
Container gardening provides you with a wide range of benefits to plant crops more easily. You can transfer them here to there to give them more sunlight or protect them from the harsh weather.
It is popular for those who have limited space. You can hang them, you can put them on your rooftop or home. It can thrive in almost all spaces based on the varieties.
But you need to water them more than from direct planting. In my journey, I Learned that container gardening is preferable for herbs, tomatoes, and leafy greens. It is not applicable for root vegetables, but you can grow them in containers by using deep containers between 16 inches to 25 inches.
Raised Beds
Raised bed gardening is another method that is very popular for its ease and flexibility. That’s because you can make raised beds using wood and no nails are needed to join the wooden pieces. You can get a Diy raised bed wood dorm nearest the garden center.
This method is very beneficial for specific varieties of crops, mostly the root vegetables and those vegetables that like loose soil. But it is true you’ll need to invest some time and effort, as well as some initial costs.
Planning Your Garden Layout
Planning is as important as location selection. You need to think about how much space you have and which plants are best for you. Planting in raised beds or on a container will be great for a new gardener because it gives a wide range of control and organizing benefits. In my early years,
I planted too many varieties in a small space, leading to overcrowding and poor yields. But now I try to create the best environment according to the varieties of plants so that their adequate growth takes place.
Now come on Plant selection. When you are a beginner and you are looking for some crops for your garden you need to find some good crops that will be easy to grow and more productive. In my first time, I also did this. But don’t worry, I am here to save you so you don’t need to take the hassle.
Here’s what I recommend for beginner gardeners:
- Tomatoes: They’re relatively easy to grow and provide good amounts of yield.
- Lettuce: Quick to grow and great for cooler months. They like rich soil, but they don’t like logging.
- Carrots: They need to lose fertile soil so they can provide long and straight roots for them. But they don’t require much space.
- Zucchini: These are fast growers and very productive. They need a lot of space because their vines can cover a large area.
Keep your taller plants like tomatoes or others at the back of your garden bed so they will not overshadow smaller plants.
Soil Preparation
Choosing the right soil is the most important thing in gardening because it is where it all begins. Soil is the foundation of any garden and that’s why the soil you choose must be rich in nutrients, well-draining, and suited to the needs of the plants. As a beginner, I suggest you use good quality, soil, or potting mix purchased from the nearest market.
If you think the potting mix is expensive for you, you can make Your garden soil by reading my explanation blog about Improving Soil Quality.
I believe planting vegetables in raised beds is better than direct soil. Because you get more flexibility to maintain your plans and maximize your harvest. Raise beds allow for better control and provide your garden more efficiency.
To make the best quality soil you may need some things in your mind. Focus on getting the right amount of organic matter on your soil. If your soil is not reached in fertilizer plans, you will fight to get more nutrients.
You can add Cattle compost, kitchen compost, kettle manure, or others to increase the nutrient level of the soil. You can add Coco Dust if your soil is dense and heavy. Coco dust makes soil lighter.
Another important thing is testing your soil regularly because it helps you to know how your soil is and what needs to be done. It informs you about soil nutrients, Health pH levels, and many more things so you can take the necessary steps. For them for example. If your soil pH level is lower than seven, you can use Lime to maintain the pH level.
Seeds for Beginners
Choosing seeds is very important for gardening because the entire plant comes from the tiny seed. If the seed is not quality full, your plant will be a struggle, no matter how much care you give it. So choosing the right side is very important.
Starting with the Right Seeds
All of the time I tried to use good quality packed seeds because they provide the highest germination rate and also provide a good quality plant and a good quality plant is the backbone of a good harvest. I recommend you to get started with heirloom or organic seeds if you can. Heirloom vegetables are very flavorful and easy to grow so it is very good for a new garden. Look for certified organic seeds from reputable suppliers.
In my opinion, sowing seeds in the garden provides better results for some crops like carrots, potatoes, Beets, lettuce, and many other Root and Leafy Vegetables. That’s because root vegetables go deeper and on the other hand, leafy vegetables have a shorter growing season.
I also do seedlings for some plants like Tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, and some other vegetables. You need to understand which plants need seedlings and which ones don’t.
Essential Tools for New Gardeners
Gardening doesn’t require much fancy equipment, but having the right tool makes your journey more easy and enjoyable. Here is the list of necessary tools. You need to make your gardening journey more here as a beginner.
- Hand Trowel: Great for planting and digging in small spaces. It will be helpful when you are planting a seedling.
- Pruning Shears: You will need these for trimming plants and harvesting veggies. But if you plant small plants or leafy veggies, you probably won’t need them.
- Hose and Nozzle: For gentle watering, especially. If your plants are far away from water, you will need this.
- Watering Can: If your garden is not so far from your water source, you can use water in the can to water your plants.
- Garden Gloves: Protect your hands from unwanted things. It is necessary to protect yourself.
- Garden Fork: Useful for turning soil and mixing compost. It also helped to tilt the soil.
You may need some other gardening tools like a Soil pH Tester to test your soil pH level. Dibber to make small holes and place seedlings into it. Spade to mix soil and other works. You can also buy them later when the garden grows and you feel them necessary.
Plant and Maintai Your Garden
When your plans are planted the main work begins! After that, you need to do regular maintenance because it is the key to a thriving garden. Watering, mulching, or fertilizing and the right maintenance can make a garden successful. Of course, you need to show a bit of patience.
Now the flow moves naturally into the tips of watering, mulching, and fertilizing! Okay, so let’s talk about watering, mulching, and fertilizing.
- Watering: Water whales becouse plants to collect nutrients from the soil through water. Try watering your plan early in the morning. I usually use a deep irrigation system in my garden because my garden is now very big and it is very time-consuming to water all of them. But you don’t need this for your first time because this is very costly.
You can put some clay pots under the ground and water them every few days. Water slowly seeps out through the holes in the clay pot and supplies the required water to the plant. Some of my friends have said that it has proved very beneficial for them. - Mulching: Mulching is very good for a garden because it helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Also, when it starts to decompose, it becomes organic matter that is necessary for plants. Organic mass like straw, grass clippings, or wood chips are the best.
- Fertilizing: Once your plants are established, You’ll need to fertilize with slow-release organic fertilizers to ensure your plants have a steady supply of nutrients. Every 6 months I give my soil a light fertilizer like old manure. I place this about 1 or 2 inches above the soil. Each hole should have a gap of 2 feet. I also use Oilcake as a slow-release fertilizer. Just simply put it on holes instead of organic matter.
- Weeding: Remove weeds when they are small. Because they compete with your plans for nutrients and water which is not good for your garden.
My Favourite Tricks and Tips
If you are smart, you can grow more than others. You need to implement some traits in your garden. I use companion gardening to increase microcrops. Some plants grow better than regular planting when planted together. As an example, Tomatoes with basil are a good choice. Again Corn, Beans, and Squash three sisters are also a good choice for companion planting.
The Corn makes support for Beans. Beans add nitrogen through the soil. The squash leaf spreads on the ground, suppressing weeds and retaining soil moisture.
Don’t plant the same visitable in the same space in every season. Because it makes your soil less fertile. You can do crop rotation to minimize the best and nutrient issues.
One more tip, when you are harvesting or pruning your plant use a sanitized tool and regularly harvest vegetables like zucchini and other Vine Crops because it increases the production of crops.
